OVERNIGHT ONBOARD THE LIVEABOARD

6 Night Liveaboard Tour RED SEA NORTH 2013 3

Monday toThursday,  LIVE & DIVE ONBOARD THE LIVEABOARD

The National Park begins at the small bay of Marsa Ghazlani followed by the larger and deeper bay of Marsa Bareika. Continuing along the coast to Ras Za’atar, Jackfish Alley, Eel Garden and Shark Observatory, to the southern end of the peninsula with Anemone City, Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef and ending at the Quay. Because of the geographic position this is a privileged area distinguished to strong massive currents that transport large quantities of plankton and other food that give rise to an extraordinary growth of stony and soft corals and attract large schools of both reef and pelagic marine fauna, over a thousand species in all. Schooling barracuda, jackfish, tuna and many kind of sharks swim in these deep blue waters, especially in summer from June to August, sometimes early September.

The safari will also take you to famous sites like the wrecks of Dunraven and Thistlegorm, Shag Rock and the wreck of Kingston, sail to Sha’ab Ali where shoals of dolphins are common, explore several spots at Sha’ab Mahmouds reef system or maybe cross to Abu’Nuhas.

Don’t miss the four famous reefs in the Strait of Tiran: Jackson, Thomas, Woodhouse and Gordon Reef, probably the most interesting and richest in marine life. You can choose from several dive sites with superb wall and drift diving. In the afternoon of the 7thday the boat will return to Sharm area.

DIVE THE SS THISTLEGORM

This wreck site has legendary status in the world-wide diving community.  Located north-east of Shag Rock, off Sha’ab Ali to the south-west of Ras Mohammed, with an average depth of 24m, a maximum depth of 30m and an average visibility of 20m.  The SS Thistlegorm was an army supply ship sunk by the German army in 1941.  The wreck lies at 30m, her largely intact forward section sitting almost upright on the sandy bottom.  The midsection was the epicentre of the blast which sunk her and is badly damaged.  The stern section, its huge propeller clearly visible, boasts the crew quarters, the main anti-aircraft gun and a 3.5 inch gun on deck.  Off the port side of the ship, a railway locomotive lies at 33m, thrown from its place on the deck as the ship sank.  The wreck is like a gigantic, submerged army surplus store with motor-cycles, jeeps, tanks, and even boots still on the wreck.  You can even visit the captain’s bathroom, where tubeworms grow from the silt-filled bathtub.  There are large schools of jacks, snapper, bannerfish and huge grouper as well as soft coral growth throughout.  After breakfast, a second dive is undertaken to the wreck, with a third dive after lunch.  The wreck is best dived in three dives to enable divers to see the whole of the wreck

There is a possibility of a night dive on the SS Thistlegorm if conditions permit.

JACKFISH ALLEY / ALTERNATIVES / SHARK AND YOLANDA

Jackfish Alley – The name of this site derives from the wide sandy ‘road’ between the coral ledge bordering the coast and a parallel satellite reef that is often frequented by jackfish and other predators. Along this dive there are small caves where you can easily enter.

Alternatives – Local fisherman call this site SABA ERG the “seven pinnacles”, while divers have renamed it “Alternatives” because, as it is well sheltered, it offers the opportunity to make alternative dives when conditions in the open sea are prohibitive. Alternatives have numerous sand patches and are known to resident leopard sharks. Night diving is very popular here.

Shark and Yolanda Reef – Shark reef is the most popular dive site in the Red Sea for the variety of its marine environment and above all for the extraordinary abundance of its reef and pelagic fauna. There are many dives you can make here – all of which are drift dives. The classic and most complete dive will allow you to visit not only Shark Reef but the other two sites, Anemone City and Yolanda Reef, in one. Yolanda Reef – at a depth of between 25 and 10m – the remains of the cargo of Yolanda, a Cypriot merchant ship that sank here on the night of 1-2 April 1980 while on its way to Aqaba: containers, bathtubs, sanitary fixtures, wallpaper, cases of whisky and even a BMW320 automobile that belonged to the ship captain.

STRAIT OF TIRAN - JACKSON REEF / WOODHOUSE REEF / THOMAS REEF / GORDON REEF

The Strait of Tiran lies at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba and is bounded on the west by the coast of Sinai and on the east by the island of Tiran. In the middle of this channel are four coral reefs lying in a northeast-southeast direction that were named after the 19th century English cartographers who drew the first nautical map of this region: JACKSON REEF, WOODHOUSE REEF, THOMAS REEF and GORDON REEF.

Jackson Reef – is the most northerly reef in Tiran and is known for the wreck, partially demolished in 1996, of the Cypriot merchant ship LARA (a cargo boat of 4,752 tonnes), which sank here in December 1981.

Woodhouse Reef – between Thomas and Jackson, is narrow and long, with a canyon that opens out at a depth of about 30m and runs parallel to the main axis of the reef until it reaches a sandy ledge. Must make a drift dive here and is best to do in the morning because of the sunlight.

Thomas Reef – this reef is one of the most spectacular diving sites in the northern Red Sea. The lack of mooring points makes drift diving necessary. At 35m a splendid and extremely deep canyon opens out, running parallel to the reef and crossed by three impressive arches.

Gordon Reef – is known and easily identified by the wreck of the Panamanian cargo ship LOULLIA (3,461 tonnes), which ran aground on the northern end in September 1981. The opportunity to observe various species of coral, small nudibranchs hidden in the crevices of the madrepores and with a bit of luck, Whitetip reef sharks, Hammerhead sharks and Spotted eagle rays. This site is suitable for snorkelling.
